I’ve already started a game and tested it on my iPod Touch, but the process for doing so just didn’t seem very well document. The setup is that I’m on a Windows 7 machine and I want to create and a test iOS games without the use of a Mac. Some people will tell you its not possible, but trust me, it is. It also is surprisingly not too difficult. The hardest part was finding the right information for my setup. I plan on breaking this up into two different types of posts. One type is my posts about planning…how am I going to make the game…what do I need to know to achieve such and such, etc etc…The other type of posts are going to be the end results. This will make it easier for people who are only here to get answers. I’ll be updating this post with links to the future ones, so if you’re interested in whats going on, bookmark this post.

Its been awhile and I’ve changed computers since I last tested my Flash app on an iOS device. So, I am going to need to revisit the whole process and get it going on this computer. Also, my wife lost my iPod, so I’ll be testing on her iPhone until I get a new iPhone (next week). So I’ll need to add a new device to my allowed devices.

I’ve been going back and forth on if I should begin by writing about how I’m planning on developing the game, or how to go about getting it on the iPhone. I decided we should probably start by making sure that we have all the information and programs and accounts we’ll need to test on an iOS device. It’d suck to go through making a game for it only to find out that it isn’t going to work on your setup. So that’ll be our first step. I’ll probably make at least one post for each step. It’ll probably look something like this:

Setting up Windows and Flash CS5 or CS5.5 to make iPhone, iPod, or iPad games and applications.

Planning the game’s phases, features, strategy, interactivity, story, and more.

Designing the user interface, game art, animations for importing into Flash.

Importing artwork, setting up the library, and ActionScript files.

Coding Phase 1.

Testing Phase 1.

Testing on multiple devices

Submitting to Apple.

Developing Phase 2 and beyond…

I’m sure there’ll be more steps or they’ll change and I develop them, but its good to have a base to work with. Any updates to the project as a whole will probably be added to this page, so check back sometimes if you have any questions/comments or want to check for updates without using the RSS feed.
